Happy Paws Holistic pet foods of Victoria BC owner Ron DeNoble says that there is no mandatory federal inspections or regulations with guidelines in all of North America. We were not surprised at all by the recent recall; it could have been a lot worse and even more widespread, with the large companies producing so many brands out of the same plant without mandatory government inspections! The question in our minds was when this would happen not "IF it would happen”! The disgusting part of this calamity is the pets that have suffered and many pets died, these are peoples extended 'family'! All this due to lack of an independent government inspection, a process that should be in place, without it, the risk is too great for these huge plants to cut corners on ingredients or testing to have a better bottom line, more profit -more payout to the shareholders- more bonuses and stock options to the top dogs (no pun intended) $$$ is always the bottom line! Our plant which we have a co-op agreement to produce our food and their natural brand and was chosen by us firstly for the professional, knowledgeable management & staff, secondly for the high standards of safety and quality of their products and most importantly an impressive list of credentials. This list starts with the most important one for the Canadian market - one of a few Category 3 plants - a human grade inspection facility, regularly inspected by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) which is the same body that inspects our food for human consumption! Also on this list inspection by the Canadian Vet. Medical Asc. for international Veterinary approval, the USDA - US Dept of Agriculture and approved for shipment to the EU - the European Union -which is very stringent on any food products including those for pets! The only actual mandatory North American credential is the AAFCO -the American Feed Official book of ingredient guideline, in which the only pre requisite is having your ingredients listed in this one inch thick book, your info can state "AAFCO Nutrient Profiles" not much protection for the pets! We use only government inspected BC Chicken -Herring Organic and inspected grains from the prairies. These are checked in our in house lab coming into the plant for fungal blights etc. as well as the finished food going out, part of the quality control! We can assure our customers with confidence of our food safety & quality is on par with the same food they consume at home. I personally guarantee we will never compromise in our quest for excellence in our food! Also I smell & sometimes taste our food for the Zing flavour that pets love in our high density meat & fish wholesome foods! I would not feed anything to our extended family that I would not feel safe in consuming myself! The pet food industry has been a ticking 'time bomb' it was only a matter of time before this health disaster for our pets would come to pass, without some serious intervention, surely this massive recall with the ensuing aftermath, with lead to changes needed within the entire pet food industry!
